TrueBuilt end-to-end pre construction solution
Overview
TrueBuilt addresses challenges faced by general contractors by providing a platform that enables them to seamlessly import architectural plans, generate precise measurements for materials and labor, and produce accurate project estimates. The platform also facilitates collaboration by allowing general contractors to invite subcontractors to bid on projects and compare multiple subcontractor estimates. By streamlining and expediting the bid submission process, TrueBuilt significantly enhances the efficiency of general contractors, empowering them to secure more projects and boost revenue collection.
Problem
Many general contractors employ various software applications to manage different aspects of a project. They typically utilize one software for performing measurements on architectural plans (quantity takeoff), another for generating estimates, and a third for creating bid packages and inviting subcontractors to bid. The use of disparate software systems that lack seamless data integration can impede project efficiency, limit the number of projects a general contractor can bid on, and consequently, diminish overall revenue.
Solution
I collaborated with a team of engineers and stakeholders to develop a comprehensive pre-construction platform. This platform enables general contractors to perform quantity takeoff, link the data to a catalog encompassing materials and labor, generate estimates, invite subcontractors to bid, compare subcontractor estimates, and ultimately, make informed decisions when awarding bids.

User Interviews
I conducted virtual meetings with users to gain insights into their existing workflow, identify pain points with their current technology stack, and ascertain the features they desired in a comprehensive pre-construction platform. The goal was to collect feedback on current features and understand areas for improvement in their workflow.
Customer interviews
I engaged in discussions with enterprise customers to gather feedback on the platform as new features were rolled out. This involved collecting usability feedback and understanding the specific features they desired to see in the platform.
Field Study
I conducted visits to construction offices in the Bay Area to demonstrate features and gather real-time, in-person usability feedback. This approach provided valuable insights into the overall construction workplace environment, allowing me to observe how the software performed across various devices and operating systems. It also underscored the diversity in how construction companies operate, including differences in technology utilization (or lack thereof), business structures, in-house versus subcontracted work, and continued reliance on tools such as Excel.
